Our family followed the liturgical calendar, including Advent and Christmas. Mother loved for us to cut and decorate the tree (but not too soon for fear of fire!). We would head to my uncle’s farm, where he had several choice trees from which to select. We would bring home our tree to sit on the porch in water until Christmas Eve. The morning before Christmas day, we would “green the church,” then set up and trim our own Christmas tree at home. Then, we would enjoy a family dinner and Christmas Eve services, which began at 11:00 p.m., with carols and singing and ended with the liturgy at midnight. Church was always full. Christmas day we shared presents, but never overly so. Gifts were limited to several “wanted” items. As Mother would say, “We have everything we need.”
Family togetherness is the real gift at Christmas.
