Upon the announcement of Nancy Brechtelsbauer’s retirement in December of 2016, the search for a new Cedarfield executive director was launched. After several months of searching, Virginia United Methodist Homes, Inc. is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Shaw to the position starting April 2017.
Shaw brings seventeen years of senior living experience to his new role at Cedarfield. Most recently he served as executive director for Westminster Shores, and prior to that at Westminster Suncoast, two of the Westminster Communities of Florida. During his time with Westminster Communities, he led both campuses through redevelopment expansions.
Prior to Westminster Communities, Shaw was an Associate Executive Director with Erickson Living where he led operational initiatives for three continuing care retirement communities involving culture change and resident engagement. He began his senior living career with Arden Courts, a memory care assisted living organization, and served as senior executive director for their mid-Atlantic region.
Shaw is a graduate of the William J. McGowan School of Business at King’s College in Pennsylvania, where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting and is currently a licensed Nursing Home Administrator in the State of Florida.
He and his wife, Julie, have been married for eight years. They have two children, Roger and Tyler, ages eight and seven. Julie is a speech pathologist and a Presbyterian minister. She graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity and from the University of Kansas with a Master of Arts in Communication Disorders.
Shaw is looking forward to learning about the history, traditions and people of Cedarfield. He hopes to create partnerships in the Richmond community and serve as a resource for those connections. We are thrilled to welcome Michael Shaw to the VUMH family!
